Fans named Taylor Swift Entertainer of the Year for the second consecutive year.  This year marked a record breaking year with nearly one million fans casting their vote for Entertainer of the Year and New Artist of the Year categories, combined.

Swift is the youngest and seventh solo female to take the award in the 40 year history of this category; previous winners include Loretta Lynn in 1975, Dolly Parton in 1977, Barbara Mandrell in 1980, Reba in 1994, Shania Twain in 1999, Dixie Chicks in 2000 and Carrie Underwood in 2008 and 2009.

Miranda Lambert won Female Vocalist of the Year and Blake Shelton won Male Vocalist of the Year.  This is Lambert’s third consecutive win as Female Vocalist of the Year and Shelton’s first win as Male Vocalist of the Year.

Lambert also took the prize for Album of the Year, making her the only female to have three consecutive albums win the category. Lambert previously won Album of the Year in 2007 for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and in 2009 for Revolution.

Lady Antebellum won Vocal Group of the Year for the third straight year.  Thompson Square won Vocal Duo of the Year, their first ACM Award win. Scotty McCreery was honored as New Artist of the Year - his first ACM win.

Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson won two awards - Single Record of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year for “Don’t You Wanna Stay.”

Lee Brice, Kelly Clarkson, Eli Young Band, Scotty McCreery and Thompson Square received their first time Academy of Country Music Awards.

Thompson Square Wins ACM Vocal Duo of the Year

ACountry salutes Thompson Square, winners of the ACM Vocal Duo of the Year.  ACM CEO Bob Romeo surprised the husband and wife duo of Keifer and Shawna Thompson onstage at the ACM Salute to the Military Concert at the ACM Experience at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Saturday night—just moments after they had completed their set.  The 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will be broadcast live tonight (April 1) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Thompson Square – who was officially honored as “Country Music’s Breakthrough Artist of 2011” by Music Row Magazine in February — dethroned reigning Country superstars Sugarland who have won the award for 2 years. Sugarland is also the reigning CMA Awards Vocal Duo for the past 4 years.

Thompson Square becomes only the third duo to win the ACM “Vocal Duo of the Year” Award in the past 20 years (since 1991) with Sugarland and Brooks & Dunn previously winning in the category respectively.

“It’s been a long, long road,” Keifer Thompson told the crowd. “This is one of the greatest nights of our lives.” Overcome with emotion, he continued, “It’s hard to talk when you’re crying.”

“This is a very bittersweet moment for me,” added Shawna Thompson as she fought back tears. “More sweet than bitter. My dad passed away a month ago. This is for my dad.”

Thompson Square’s win is a Country Music Cinderella Story of sorts as the duo is hardly an “overnight success,” despite its quickly skyrocketing career.

In fact, Keifer and Shawna Thompson pounded the pavement for 13 years in the music industry before finally signing to tiny independent label Stoney Creek Records. The young married couple worked odd jobs, played bar shows and knocked on countless closed doors during that time before deciding they would hang up their microphones after one last year of perseverance. During one final showcase, Broken Bow Records President/ CEO Benny Brown recognized something special in Thompson Square and signed them to his brand new independent label Stoney Creek Records (sister label to Broken Bow Records and home to Jason Aldean).

Two years ago to this very DAY, Thompson Square was first introduced to Country Radio at a suite performance during ACM Awards weekend. One year ago to this very WEEK, Thompson Square’s inaugural smash, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” reached the #1 spot at Country Radio.

In only one year, Thompson Square has seen the release of its first album debut at #3 on the Billboard Country Sales Chart and its smash, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” reach #1 on both the Billboard and Mediabase Country radio charts, conquer the Billboard Heat Seekers Chart, spend 5 weeks at #1 on the Country Digital Soundscan Chart and remain the #1 Country Ringtone for 12 weeks straight. At press time, “Are You Going to Kiss Me Or Not,” was nearing double platinum sales status.

Thompson Square also earned 16 major award show nominations in less than 12 months, including two 2012 GRAMMY nominations for “Best Country Song” and “Best Country Duo/Group Performance of the Year.”

In December, Thompson Square returned home for the holidays as the 2nd most awarded act at FOX’s 2nd Annual American Country Awards, winning the fan-voted trophies for Single of the Year by a Group; Single of the Year by a New Artist; Music Video of the Year by a New Artist (“Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not”).

Also in 2011, Thompson Square was named one of USA Today’s “Six Pack of Success” stories, was heralded as USA Weekend’s “Who’s Hot in Hollywood,” peaked at #3 on MTV’s Music Meter (all genres) and landed on Entertainment Weekly’s “Hot List.”

Thompson Square ended 2011 as the “New Country Artist of the Year” (Mediabase) as well as Billboard’s #1 New Country Artist of 2011, in terms of sales. The duo also ranked as Billboard’s #6 New Artist of 2011 (sales - all genres) and “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” was named iTunes’ “Country Single of 2011.”

Thompson Square is currently criss-crossing the U.S. as part of Lady Antebellum’s Own The Night World Tour with upcoming stops to include two nights at NYC’s legendary Radio City Music Hall on May 3 and 4.

Kenny Chesney and Costa Present $50,000 to Coastal Conservation Association

Kenny Chesney and Costa Present $50,000 to Coastal Conservation Association

ACountry salutes Kenny Chesney and Costa Sunglasses for their support of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA).  Kenny and Amanda Perryman from Costa Sunglasses presented a check for $50,000 to Pat Murray to benefit the Coastal Conservation Association. These funds were raised through sales of the Kenny Chesney Limited Edition Costa Sunglasses throughout Kenny’s Goin’ Coastal 2011 tour.

Pictured left to right: Pat Murray, president, CCA; Kenny Chesney; Amanda Perryman, marketing manager, Costa Sunglasses; Brett Palmer, CEO, AbiJack Management

The five handcrafted Kenny Chesney Limited Edition Costa sunglasses were sold throughout the tour and feature Chesney’s signature and unique hand-drawn artwork etched into each frame style, illustrating some of his favorite song lyrics and past tours.

“The relationship with Costa, and what they stand for, goes hand in hand with the music that I make,” Chesney said when the line was launched.  “It’s important for all generations to be able to enjoy the ocean like I did, and I’m proud to partner with Costa to design a line of signature sunglasses that will help support ocean conservation.”

Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) is a non-profit organization comprised of 17 coastal state chapters spanning the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic seaboard and the Pacific Northwest. CCA’s strength is drawn from the tens of thousands of recreational saltwater anglers who make up its membership. From South Texas to the upper reaches of Maine, CCA’s grassroots influence is felt through state capitals, U.S. Congress and, most importantly, in the conservation and restoration of our coastal marine resources.  For more information, visit www.joincca.org.

Costa was founded in 1983 when a group of hardcore fishermen who spent their days exploring the globe and battling extreme elements came to realize that the sunglasses they were relying on weren’t as hardcore as their adventures. Seeing the world in absolute clarity and protecting their eyes was a must. So when they couldn’t find worthy sunglasses, they decide to build their own. Costa’s mission is to create the clearest sunglasses on the planet for life’s great adventures.  Check out the full line of Costa sunglasses, apparel, and accessories at costadelmar.com.

As previously announced, Blake Shelton will join forces with country music star Reba to host the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards for the second consecutive year. For the fifth year, fans will select the winner of the Academy’s most prestigious honor, Entertainer of the Year, and for the fourth year, the New Artist of the Year category will also be opened up to fan voting. Nominees for New Artist of the Year will be announced after fan voting for the semi-finalists closes on January 30.. The winners of Entertainer of the Year and New Artist of the Year will be announced live during the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

Kenny Chesney leads with nine nominations, including Entertainer of the Year, a category he has won four times since 2004. He is nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, a category he has been nominated in nine times previously. He is twice nominated for Album of the Year for Hemingway’s Whiskey, as both artist and producer, and also earned double nominations for Single Record of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year as both artist and producer for “You And Tequila” with Grace Potter. Chesney is also nominated for Song of the Year for “You And Tequila” with Grace Potter.

Jason Aldean is nominated for six awards, including his second consecutive nods for Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. He is nominated for Album of the Year for My Kinda Party, and has nominations for Single Record of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year for “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” featuring Kelly Clarkson. He is nominated for Video of the Year for “Tattoos On This Town.”

Lady Antebellum leads group nominations with five nods, including Vocal Group of the Year, which they have won for two consecutive years. They are also nominated for Album of the Year as artists and producers for Own The Night, and for Song of the Year and Video of the Year for “Just A Kiss.”

Reigning Male Vocalist of the Year, Brad Paisley, is nominated for four awards, including his fifth consecutive nomination for Entertainer of the Year and eighth nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year, which he has won five times consecutively between 2006-2010. He received two nominations in the Vocal Event of the Year category for “Old Alabama” with Alabama and “Remind Me” with Carrie Underwood.

Toby Keith received three nominations for “Red Solo Cup,” including Video of the Year, which he last won in 2003 for “Beer For My Horses.” He also received a double nomination as artist and producer for Single Record of the Year for “Red Solo Cup.” Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill is also nominated for Nightclub of the Year (a nod that is not among Keith’s total nominations count, because it is awarded to the venue itself not it’s owners).

Reigning Entertainer of the Year, Taylor Swift, leads solo female nominees with three nominations, including her third consecutive nod for Entertainer of the Year. If Swift wins Entertainer of the Year, this will be her second consecutive win in that category. Swift is nominated for the fifth time for Female Vocalist of the Year, and for the third time for Video of the Year for “Mean.”

First-time ACM nominee, Grace Potter, received three nominations for “You And Tequila” with Kenny Chesney, in the Single Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year categories.

Eli Young Band has three nominations including Vocal Group of the Year, as well as Single Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Crazy Girl.”

Dierks Bentley, Kelly Clarkson, Vince Gill, Miranda Lambert, Aaron Lewis, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood and Chris Young all received two nominations each.

The Academy of Country Music’s professional membership select the nominees and winners of the ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS, and select the final top five nominees of the Entertainer of the Year category and the eight semi-finalists in the New Artist of the Year category. Presenters and performers who will appear at the ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Fan voting for New Artist of the Year began at VoteACM.com and GACtv.com/ACM on January 16, 2012 and will close on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 12noon ET/9:00AM PT, after which nominees in that category will be announced separately. Fan voting for New Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year begins on March 19, 2012 at 9:00AM ET/12noon PT at VoteACM.com. Fan voting for New Artist of the Year will close at 5 p.m. PT on April 1, 2012 (before the LIVE show starts) and fan voting for Entertainer of the Year will close during the third hour of the LIVE broadcast.

Robert Earl Keen : Merry Christmas From the Family Video

Merry Christmas From The Family is the companion book for Robert Earl Keen’s popular Christmas tune of the same name. Using authentic Keen family photos, recipes, and craft instructions, it illustrates all the verses of the song, which you can sing along with on the accompanying CD. Whether you"re one of Robert Earl’s legion of fans, or you’ve just had enough of Perry, Bing, and the other crooners, Merry Christmas from the Family is what you need to keep the holidays in hilariously skewed perspective.

Merry Christmas From The Family lyrics

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
At our Christmas party
We were drinkin’ champagne punch
And homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn’t know what to think of him
Til he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad

Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins

From his second wife Mary Nell
Of course he brought his new wife Kaye
Who talks all about AA
Chain smokin’ while the stereo plays
Noel, Noel, The first Noel

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix Margaritas when the eggnog’s gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extension cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of pampers , some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Fran and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can’t remember how I’m kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motor home in
They blew our christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited on our front lawn
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night
Oh Silent Night o’ holy night

Carve the turkey turn the ballgame on
Mix Bloody Marys cause we all want one
Send somebody to the Stop ‘n Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Diet Sprite
A box of midol, some Salem Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and take a moment to watch this amazing holiday video by the kids of St. Jude.  As you’re looking for the perfect holiday gift, please consider giving the gift of hope by making an online donation to St. Jude in honor of your favorite country music artist.  St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. And St. Jude covers the cost of lodging, food and travel for patients and a family member. No donation is too small!

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.  Research efforts are directed at understanding the molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic diseases in children; identifying cures for such diseases; and promoting their prevention. Research is focused specifically on cancers, some acquired and inherited immunodeficiencies, sickle cell disease, infectious diseases and genetic disorders.

About 5,700 active patients are seen at St. Jude yearly, most of whom are treated on a continuing outpatient basis as part of ongoing research programs. The hospital also has 78 beds for patients requiring hospitalization during treatment. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world.

Patients at St. Jude are referred by a physician, and nearly all have a disease currently under study and are eligible for a research protocol. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.

Taylor Swift won her second CMA Entertainer of the Year trophy. Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton won Female Vocalist and Male Vocalist for the second consecutive year. Jason Aldean won his first two CMA Awards for Musical Event of the Year with Kelly Clarkson, and Album of the Year for My Kinda Party. The Band Perry won their first Awards for Single of the Year for “If I Die Young” and New Artist of the Year. Kimberly Perry claimed an additional trophy for Song of the Year for penning the hit song. Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter won for Music Video of the Year. Lady Antebellum picked up their third trophy for Vocal Group of the Year, and Sugarland won Vocal Duo of the Year for the fifth time.

“One of my favorite things about this year is all the camaraderie between all these artists that I could call and say, ‘Hey, do you want to come sing with me?’” said Swift. “And there were more artists who showed up just out of the goodness of their heart and came out and performed for the fans at my shows.”

She then read out all the names of people who had performed with her, written on her hand, and ended by exclaiming, “You have made my year! Thank you so much!”

The Band Perry won their first-ever CMA Awards for Single of the Year for “If I Die Young,” along with producer Paul Worley, and New Artist of the Year.
“Oh, first of all, we wanted to say thank you to the beautiful fans of Country Music,” said Kimberly Perry. “It is the joy of our whole lives to sing this song for you guys.”
After winning New Artist of the Year, she added: “We promise to keep working hard every day out on the road and here in Nashville to earn this Award.”

As a songwriter, Kimberly Perry picked up the trophy for Song of the Year for penning “If I Die Young.”

“I truly believe that if ‘I Die Young’ would have been written with or without me, it was a song that was meant to be,” she said. “But I was so excited to have pen and paper in hand when it was ready to come to earth.”

Aldean, who received first-time nominations in five categories in 2011, won Album of the Year for My Kinda Party, along with producer Michael Knox, and for Musical Event of the Year for “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson. This was Clarkson’s first win, too. In 2007 she was nominated for Musical Event of the Year with Reba for “Because of You.”

Aldean exclaimed “What a year!” before thanking his family and singling out Knox. “He’s like my big brother,” Aldean said. “This guy found me in a club in Atlanta, Georgia, brought me to Nashville 15 years ago and has made every record I’ve ever done.”
/
Shelton had one of the memorable performances of the night, joining ‘80s star Kenny Loggins in a rocking Country version of “Footloose” to open the show.

“‘You’re spoiling me!’” Shelton said, with a laugh, after accepting his Award for Male Vocalist. “I really didn’t prepare anything to say at all. I didn’t think y’all would let me get away with this two times.”

One of the many highlights of the night was a stirring tribute to Glen Campbell, a Country Music Hall of Fame member and former CMA Entertainer of the Year. The tribute included an emotional three-song medley with three former CMA Entertainer of the Year recipients honoring the legend: Vince Gill performing “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”; Keith Urban singing “Wichita Lineman”; and co-host Paisley performing “Galveston.”

The tribute brought a standing ovation inside the Bridgestone Arena. At the moment’s crescendo, composer Jimmy Webb and Campbell embraced on stage, and the cheers got even louder.

Later, after the Awards, Campbell described the tribute medley of his tunes as “Awesome, it really was. The whole thing was wonderful. It’s great when they come off nice, isn’t it?”

Memorable performances for the night also included co-hosts Paisley and Underwood performing their hit duet “Remind Me.” This was their first live performance of the No. 1 hit song on national television. Former CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Faith Hill also gave her first performance in five years at the CMA Awards. Hill debuted “Come Home,” a single from her forthcoming new album due out in early 2012. Southern rocker Gregg Allman joined Zac Brown Band on a cover “Georgia On My Mind.” Little Big Town, Darius Rucker, and Rascal Flatts joined music icon Lionel Richie for a medley of his hits.

Paisley and Underwood warmed up the crowd to start the night with Hank Williams Jr. making a surprise appearance as the hosts performed a re-vamped version of Williams’ well-known anthem “Family Tradition” to cheers and applause. Later in the evening, Little Jimmy Dickens, made a cameo appearance with the pair.

Four-time CMA Entertainer of the Year Chesney won his first Award for Music Video of the Year for “You and Tequila” featuring Potter (her first CMA Award)  and directed by Shaun Silva. At the backstage media area Chesney said, “Shaun got it right. That’s the first thing went through my mind. He got it right.”

Referring to his cross-genre performance with Potter as evidence of Country Music’s widening appeal, Chesney said, “This just goes to show you the power of music. It reflects the way people listen to music today. I have a very eclectic audience that comes to see us play every summer. The music that I make, and the music that Grace makes reflect that.”

Sugarland picked up their fifth Vocal Duo of the Year Award before performing “Run” with Matt Nathanson.

“First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Gregg Allman. That was me on the red carpet that reached out and shook your hand,” Jennifer Nettles said with a grin. “I would love to dedicate this to the fans this year. Thank you, guys. Thank you to the good folks in Indiana.”
/
Reigning Vocal Group of the Year Lady Antebellum won Vocal Group of the Year for the third consecutive year. “There is no way we can be singled out among this group (of nominees),” said Dave Haywood. “For all the groups in this category, this is incredible to be in the same list.”

Guitarist Mac MacAnally picked up his fourth Musician of the Year Award in the pre-broadcast ceremony.

Presenters for the night included: 2011 “American Idol” runner-up Lauren Alaina; ESPN sportscaster and “Good Morning America” correspondent Erin Andrews; 2005 CMA Horizon Award winner Dierks Bentley; Country star Billy Currington; actor Josh Dallas (star of ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”); 2011 World Series MVP and St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese; actress Ginnifer Goodwin (star of ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”); actor Kellan Lutz (star of the “Twilight” movie series and the upcoming “Immortals”); Muppet icon Miss Piggy; Country stars Jake Owen and Kellie Pickler; six-time CMA Award winner and 2011 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Reba; 1997 CMA Horizon Award winner LeAnn Rimes; Emmy Award-winning actor Eric Stonestreet (star of ABC’s “Modern Family”); actress Emily VanCamp (star of ABC’s “Revenge”); and Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon.
/
Performers included Aldean, The Band Perry, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Sara Evans, Faith Hill, Lady Antebellum, Lambert, Martina McBride, Scotty McCreery, Shelton, Swift, Sugarland, Thompson Square, Urban, Chris Young; plus Chesney and Potter singing their hit collaboration “You and Tequila”; and Rascal Flatts and Natasha Bedingfield singing their current hit duet “Easy.”

Jason Aldean received first-time nominations in five categories in 2011 including Entertainer; Male Vocalist; Album for My Kinda Party, produced by Michael Knox; and Single and Musical Event of the Year for “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson, also produced by Knox. Aldean has two prior nominations including the Horizon Award in 2007 and in 2008 when the category changed names to CMA New Artist of the Year. Clarkson was last nominated in 2007 for Musical Event of the Year with Reba McEntire for “Because of You.”  Aldean’s golden touch in 2011 extended to songwriters Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford, who penned Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem,” nominated for Song of the Year.

Brad Paisley received five nominations for Entertainer; Male Vocalist; Album for This is Country Music, which was produced by Frank Rogers; Musical Event and Music Video of the Year for “Old Alabama,” featuring Alabama and directed by Jim Shea. Paisley’s nominations keep him in the No. 3 spot for the most career nominations in CMA Awards history. He has been nominated every year since 2000 and has amassed an incredible 57 career nominations to date. Only George Strait (81) and Alan Jackson (80) have more. With their two nominations Alabama has 41 career nods. The supergroup has won nine CMA Awards including three for Entertainer of the Year. The group received its last nomination in 2004 in the Vocal Group of the Year category.

Blake Shelton received five nominations including Entertainer; Male Vocalist; Album for All About Tonight, produced by Scott Hendricks; and Single (produced by Hendricks) and Music Video of the Year for “Honey Bee,” directed by Trey Fanjoy.

Taylor Swift received five nominations including Entertainer; Female Vocalist; Album for Speak Now, which was produced by Swift and Nathan Chapman; Music Video for “Mean,” which was directed by Declan Whitebloom; and Song of the Year for “Mean,” written by Swift, her first nomination as a songwriter. Swift received five nominations, but can receive an additional trophy as producer of her album. Swift won the Horizon Award in 2007 and two years later was named Entertainer of the Year (2009).

The Band Perry received four nominations including Vocal Group; New Artist; Single for “If I Die Young,” produced by Paul Worley; and Music Video of the Year for “If I Die Young,” directed by David McClister. In addition, lead singer Kimberly Perry received one solo nomination for penning “If I Die Young,” nominated for Song of the Year.

Zac Brown Band received four nominations for Vocal Group; Album for You Get What You Give, produced by Keith Stegall and Zac Brown; Musical Event for “As She’s Walking Away” with Alan Jackson; and Single of the Year for “Colder Weather,” produced by Stegall and Brown. Additionally, bandmates Brown and Coy Bowles each received a nomination for Song of the Year for writing “Colder Weather” with Wyatt Durrette and Levi Lowrey. Brown could also pick up an additional two trophies for producing the nominated Album and Single of the Year.

Rounding out the Entertainer of the Year category with Aldean, Paisley, Shelton, and Swift is Keith Urban, who won the trophy in 2005. Urban is also nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, which he has won three times (2004, 2005, and 2006).

Kenny Chesney received three nominations including Male Vocalist; Musical Event and Music Video of the Year for “You and Tequila” featuring Grace Potter and directed by Shaun Silva. Matraca Berg and Deana Carter each received a nomination for Song of the Year for penning the No. 1 hit. These are Potter’s first CMA Awards nominations.

Sara Evans was nominated for Female Vocalist and Single of the Year for “A Little Bit Stronger,” produced by Tony Brown. Brown leads the list of nominees among non-performers with 39 career nominations.

Carrie Underwood received her sixth nomination for Female Vocalist in 2011. Underwood won Female Vocalist of the Year in 2006, 2007, and 2008. If Underwood wins the Female Vocalist of the Year trophy again, it will tie her with Martina McBride (1999, 2002-2004) and Reba McEntire (1984-1987) for most wins in this category. McBride is nominated in the category again in 2011, with Evans, reigning Female Vocalist Miranda Lambert, and Swift.

Miranda Lambert received a second nomination along with Sheryl Crow and Country royalty, Loretta Lynn for Musical Event of the Year for their performance of the classic “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” The song, which tells the story of Lynn’s humble beginnings, was nominated for Song of the Year in 1971. The subsequent soundtrack for the movie by the same title won CMA Album of the Year honors in 1980. Lynn, who was CMA’s first Female Vocalist of the Year in 1967 and first female Entertainer of the Year in 1972, received her last CMA Awards nomination in 1994 for Musical Event of the Year with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette for “Silver Thread and Golden Needles.”

Thompson Square received their first nominations in 2011 for Vocal Duo and New Artist of the Year. In all, there were new names among the nominees in 10 of the 12 CMA Awards categories including Entertainer, Male Vocalist, Album, Vocal Duo, Single, Song, Music Video, Musical Event, Musician, and New Artist.

Another duo making their CMA debut in the Vocal Duo of the Year category is The Civil Wars. Joining them are Montgomery Gentry, who won the Award in 2000, Steel Magnolia, Thompson Square, and Sugarland, who has won the trophy four times (2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010).

In addition to The Band Perry and Thompson Square, the New Artist category also includes Luke Bryan, Eric Church, and Chris Young. Bryan and Young were nominated in the category in 2010. This is Church’s first CMA Awards nomination. Artists can only be included in this category two times.

The Musician of the Year category included first-time nominee Sam Bush (mandolin) along with Jerry Douglas (dobro), Paul Franklin (steel guitar), Dann Huff (guitar), and Mac McAnally (guitar).

Winners of “The 45th Annual CMA Awards” will be determined in a final round of voting by eligible voting members of the Country Music Association. CMA Awards balloting is officiated by the international accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP.

The CMA Awards nominees and winners are determined by the 6,400 industry professional members of CMA, which was the first trade organization formed to promote an individual genre of music in 1958. The first CMA Awards Banquet and Show was held in 1967 at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. The following year, the CMA Awards moved to the Ryman Auditorium and was broadcast on NBC television for the first time - making it the longest running, annual music awards program on network television.

Sugarland : Moment Of Silence

Sugarland’s moment of silence in Albuquerque on August 18 marked the band’s return to the stage for the first time since their stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair five days earlier.  Surrounded by her band mates and crew, Jennifer Nettles asked the audience for a moment of silence:

“I am sure that by now all of you are well aware of the tragedy that occurred at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday.,Moments before we were about to take the stage, a huge gust of wind blew in and collapsed the entire stage, wounding over 40 people and killing five. In honor of those people who were wounded and those beautiful lives that were lost, we ask you to stand and join us now in a moment of silence.”

The band followed the moment of silence with a stirring rendition of “Love.”  “So we know, Albuquerque, that you guys came to see a show. Obviously, in the loss of our set and our instruments and our equipment, this Incredible Machine looks very different right now. But we are going to try our best to put on our professional faces and come out here for you and celebrate a moment with you of the joy and the healing power of music,” Jennifer added.

Sugarland : Music - The Incredible Healer

Sugarland : Music - The Incredible Healer

Sugarland begins the healing process by resuming The Incredible Machine Tour.  “There is healing in our being together. There is healing in our working together. For this reason we are planning to get back on the road this weekend, beginning with our scheduled show in Albuquerque (August 18).  This Incredible Machine is more than a tour and more than a set. We have always celebrated music as a Healer. While music cannot change the events and losses at the Indiana State Fair, it can hopefully serve as a ritual and a balm to provide comfort and facilitate healing in this time of great sorrow.”

Dear Fans, Family and Friends,

We have taken a couple of days to try and even begin to emotionally process the magnitude and gravity of the tragedy in Indiana on Saturday. While the path to healing from this type of trauma and loss is long and winding, we wanted to reach out and update you on where we are and how we are.

We are in the process of planning a private memorial in Indiana, to honor those fans who died. We would first like to hold space so that their families can have time to go through their own services and memorials. Until that time we are holding vigil for them. We join them on their mourning benches. And we stand in the gap asking God to offer them peace and healing. For those suffering from injury we hold you up with prayers for complete healing of your own.

We are also addressing our own specific healing. Our road family experienced its traumas together. While we all scattered to our given families for their comfort, the trauma we experienced together binds us in a unique way that we share only with each other, and those who were there. There is healing in our being together. There is healing in our working together. For this reason we are planning to get back on the road this weekend, beginning with our scheduled show in Albuquerque this Thursday, August 18th. The emotions have us yearning to be close to each other immediately. The logistics have us needing to replace all of our instruments and equipment. (The set is a loss that is insignificant in light of the tragedy.)

This Incredible Machine is more than a tour and more than a set. We have always celebrated music as a Healer. While music cannot change the events and losses at the Indiana State Fair, it can hopefully serve as a ritual and a balm to provide comfort and facilitate healing in this time of great sorrow. We hope to see you all soon.

Love,

Sugarland Stage Collapses At Indiana State Fair

Sugarland’s stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair shortly before the band took the stage. CNN reports: A massive gust of wind brought down a stage at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday night, killing at least four and injuring 24, officials said.  Jennifer, Kristian, and the band are safe, as posted on the band’s website: “We are all right after our stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair tonight. Many of our fans and friends in Indianapolis may not be. Please keep them in your thoughts, prayers, or whatever form of strength you are able to send. They need you. Thank you.”

“We are stunned and heartbroken for the fans and their families in Indiana,” Jennifer Nettles said. “We hold those injured in our prayers at this very sad time. There are no words. It is tragic.”

“I am so moved. Moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families. Moved by the great heroism as I watched so many brave Indianapolis fans actually run toward the stage to try and help lift and rescue those injured. Moved by the quickness and organization of the emergency workers who set up the triage and tended to the injured. There are no words to process a moment of this magnitude and gravity. There are only prayers for peace in the hearts of the bereft, and prayers of thanksgiving for those who were spared or safe. A piece of our heart is left in that grandstand. May God provide peace and healing to the people of Indianapolis.” - Jennifer Nettles

“Our fans just came to see a show, and it ended in something terrible. My heart is totally broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives. It’s broken for all the people who got hurt, for the people who were scared. I thank God for every person who lifted a truss, who pushed against that metal to get it off someone; for every person who used a chair as a stretcher. I thank God for every fan and emergency responder, for everyone who ran to the trouble instead of away from it. The courage of those men and women will forever be with me.” - Kristian Bush

The Indianapolis Department of Public Safety posted on its Twitter page the death toll and said that 24 people had been taken to area hospitals.  Two local hospitals placed the number of injured at 43, including some walk-in patients.Capt. Brad Weaver, commander of special operations for the Indiana State Police, said he took the stage at 8:45 p.m. to warn the audience of severe weather.
Ten minutes later, the wind gust blew through. He said he “saw the framework from the stage start to come over.” He said he and others took cover behind a trailer, which was also struck by debris from the stage.

News update:  At a Sunday morning news conference, ISP 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten confirmed that four people were pronounced dead shortly after the collapse and that another died early Sunday. He said the injuries to some victims are so severe that the death toll could rise.

While most of the injured were treated and released from Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, nine patients were admitted and still being treated Sunday afternoon, the hospital said. Three children remained at Riley Hospital for Children, the hospital said.

The Marion County, Indiana, coroner identified the three women and two men who died as: Tammy Vandam, 42, of Wanatah, Indiana; Glenn Goodrich, 49, of Indianapolis; Alina Bigjohny, 23, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Christina Santiago, 29, of Chicago; and Nathan Byrd, 51, of Indianapolis.  Vandam, Goodrich, Bigjohny and Santiago were dead at the scene, while Byrd died later at the hospital, the coroner said.

Gov. Mitch Daniels described the collapse as a “freakish accident.”

At a press briefing after the accident, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard praised first responders working at the scene.

“Everything has been very well coordinated to respond to this event,” Ballard said.

He called the response “very orderly, very calm but at the same time. First responders have done a terrific job here tonight and they have the situation in hand even though it’s still a bit fluid.”

Indiana State Police Captain Brad Weaver expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy. He said a warning was issued to the crowd at 8:45 p.m. and the collapse occurred 10 minutes later.

Weaver said emergency crews responded to the scene and others helped lift the stage to get people out. Twelve ambulances were on the scene within 15 minutes of the collapse.

Weaver was reportedly at the event in plain clothes as a spectator.

State police say they were watching severe weather on radar and were carrying out an evacuation order when the stage collapsed.

Concertgoer Emily Davis, said that officials mentioned an evacuation plan, but never made an announcement to leave the scene. She said the accident happened very fast.

“They said, if need be, this is what we’re going to do and somebody will come back out and tell you, but they didn’t have time to come back out and tell us,” she said.

Charlie Morgan from Hank FM, which sponsored the concert, believes it was wind shear that caused the collapse.

He says the people in the “Sugarpit”, the area just in front of the stage, had closest access and bore the brunt of the falling rigging.

“I did not personally witness people leaving that area prior to the stage coming down,” he said.

Weather officials said winds in the area were in excess of 50 mph, including a gust reported around 77 mph near Plainfield.

“It was the most traumatic thing I’ve ever seen,” said Crystal Wilbur, witness.

Scotty McCreery : I Love You This Big Video

Scotty McCreery’s I Love You This Big Video was directed by Shane Drake and filmed at Angels Point in Los Angeles.  “The location for the shoot was really cool,” Scotty says. “If you looked one way, you could see Dodger Stadium, and if you looked another way, you could see downtown L.A.”
“We found this park that had a little country feel to it and it all worked out,” he says. “If I hadn’t told you that, you would think we would have shot that in North Carolina. The music video has a summertime barbecue feel, like a July Fourth party with fireworks and hot dogs and families.”
After the shoot ended, Scotty spent time with all of the video’s cast members of all ages. “They were there the whole day and helped me out in the video,” he says. “They’re going to be in my first video, so I thought it was important to thank them for being there.”

Ashton Shepherd Interview : Ask-Reply

Ashton Shepherd answers fans questions, including where the concept for the Look It Up video came from, her favorite subject in high school, what career she would have if she wasn’t a singer/songrwiter, the charities she supports, and how real life experiences affect her music. Ashton’s new album, Where Country Grows, is in stores now.

“...her debut, Sounds So Good, was one of the best country releases of 2008. Where Country Grows is even better …Alabama spitfire matches killer voice to immaculate tunes…She can be as rugged as Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson, and sings better than each.” - Rolling Stone

“Among strong, young hardcore-country women, Miranda Lambert is Ashton’s only real competition,” - Entertainment Weekly

“Shepherd has a voice that is instantly recognizable - a sharp twang that she brandishes like a weapon. On her new single ‘Look It Up,’ she uses it to send an unfaithful man crawling to the dictionary: ‘You said you’re sober? Look it up. It’s right next to ‘hell is freezing over,’ ‘flying pigs’ and all that stuff.’” - The Washington Post

“Shepherd is a rare talent; Shepherd co−wrote “I’m Good” with master country songwriter Dean Dillon and impressive traditional songwriter Dale Dodson. The result ranks with country anthems by Tammy Wynette and Reba McEntire. It proves Shepherd can rank among the best of her generation, when applying her strong voice to songs as powerful as this.” - Associated Press

“Country Music is alive….and her name is Ashton Shepherd!” - Music News Nashville

Lady Antebellum : Just A Kiss Video

Lady Antebellum’s Just A Kiss video, the first single off their third album, Own The Night, was directed by Shaun Silva.  Written by Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood, and Dallas Davidson, Just A Kiss follows the romantic journey of a young couple.  The Just A Kiss video was filmed at several locations around the globe, including Lebanon, Tennessee.

“The day we wrote this song was one of those days that renewed my faith in the bond the three of us have as songwriters,”  Charles Kelley told The Boot. “It came so easily, and it reminded me of the early days when we first started out, and we’d spend hours in my brother Josh [Kelley]‘s house writing songs. Everyone keeps asking if we feel pressure after the success of ‘Need You Now,’ and we are trying to not even think about the new album or these songs in those terms. We are just writing about what we are going through in our lives, and we hope that country music fans continue to connect with them.”

“It was at an old rail station, but in order to shoot, we had to get on a train and physically ride so they could get things in the background,” Dave Haywood told CMT. “So we would ride on a train from Lebanon to Watertown (Tenn.) and back. We would shoot individually for 30 minutes, and they’d turn the train back around, we’d sit on the other side of the booth and shoot it again. I thought it was kind of a cool way to shoot.”

Hillary Scott adds, “There’s something to just the whole train car. It’s very romantic. They’re starting a relationship ... passing each other in the train station and catching eye contact. I mean, it’s just very romantic. ... Being the girl in the group, I’ve seen so many movies where the guy’s running after the train and she’s leaning out. It just sets that mood.”

The Band Perry : You Lie Video

The Band Perry’s You Lie video, the third single from their debut album, is the follow-up to their number one hit If I Die Young.  Directed by David McClister and written by Aaron, Brian and Clara Henningsen, You Lie is the tale of a woman angered by her partner’s infidelity and lying.

...“You lie like a priceless Persian rug on a rich man’s floor
You lie a coon dog baskin’ in the sunshine on my porch
Yeah, you lie like a penny in a parkin’ lot at the grocery store
It just comes way to natural to you
The way you lie” ...

“‘You Lie’ is a flavor that nobody has tasted from the Band Perry,” Kimberly told The Boot.  “When we heard that one, we said, ‘Oh, we have to record this song.  That was our favorite one, so it’s going to be an exciting next page for the Band Perry.”
