Academy of Country Music Awards

2006 ACM Nominations were cause for celebration across the country as artists learned of their nominations. The 41st Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on CBS Television Network.

Sugarland is nominated for Album of the Year for “Twice the Speed of Life,” Top New Duo or Vocal Group of the Year and Top Vocal Group of the Year, Single Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Baby Girl.” Jennifer Nettles is also nominated for Vocal Event of the Year for “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” with Bon Jovi. Jennifer Nettles says, “2006 has started out as a great year.. Who would have thought that we could go from closing the ACM’s last year as newcomers to being nominated for five awards this year? Such an honor!” Kristian Bush couldn’t believe the announcement. “I had to go on-line and read it twice…Also, Brad Paisley called me this morning and said that if we had just worked a little harder last year, we could have had as many nominations as he does”, he joked. Julie Roberts was in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport when she received news of her Top New Female Artist nomination. “A man came up to me and said congratulations. I said, ‘For what?’ He said for your ACM nomination.” Julie says she screamed so loud that she might have scared him to death.”

Lee Ann Womack received three Academy of Country Music nominations: Top Female Vocalist, Album for “There’s More Where That Came From,” and Video of the Year for “I May Hate Myself In The Morning.” Of her album nomination, Lee Ann says, “I‚Äôm so flattered that this album is being recognized because it is so close to my heart. It is one of my proudest achievements.”

Gary Allan is recognized in two Academy of Country Music categories: Album of the Year for “Tough All Over” and Single Record for “Best I Ever Had.” “All of my records are personal, but this one is by far my most personal,” says the singer. “I put my heart and soul into it.”

Billy Currington says of his Top New Male nomination, “What an honor! This year keeps getting better and better! “

Carrie Underwood is recognized in the Top Female Vocalist, Top New Female Vocalist, Song and Single of the Year categories for “Jesus, Take The Wheel.” The song topped the charts for six weeks. Carrie says, “To be among the names was so unexpected. I can’t believe my name is among the other amazing female vocalists.” Underwood’s competition in the Female Vocalist category include Sara Evans, Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson and Lee Ann Womack

Rascal Flatts is nominated for Entertainer of the Year nomination, Top Vocal Group, Album for “Feels Like Today” and Song of the Year for “Skin.” Gary LeVox says, “We are honored and blown away to be up for four awards, and surprised and proud by the Entertainer nomination.”

Dierks Bentley did a surprise show Wednesday at the Lambda Chi Fraternity House at the University of Georgia in Athens. “It’s ironic that I found out the same day I’m headed to a frat house to play for four hundred college kids for free beer. It just shows how far we’ve come, but that we haven’t forgotten where we’ve come from.”

Kenny Chesney received word of his two Academy of Country Music nominations while in rehearsals for his upcoming The Road & The Radio tour. Chesney says, “You’re always so glad to see that your peers and the people who make this business rock recognize both the hard work that goes into this music and what we do.” Chesney is the reigning Entertainer of the Year. He won Top Male Vocalist in 2003.

Keith Urban is nominated for Top Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. Of the nominations, the singer says, “To those who have seen us on the road and had us in their thoughts, and to our country radio and video stations and my label, I thank you for giving me the opportunity to do what I love most.”

Lonestar received their eighth Academy of Country Music nomination and their sixth consecutive nomination as Top Vocal Group. Lead singer Richie McDonald says, “It is such an honor for us to be nominated for this award along with such talented groups, especially Alabama, who have been an inspiration to us.”

Little Big Town received nominations in the Top Vocal Group and Top New Duo or Vocal Group categories. The band’s Karen Fairchild said her mother was watching “The Early Show” and heard they were nominated for Group of the Year. Karen thought her mother was confused and meant Top New Vocal Group. She says, “How great to find out we are nominated in both of those categories! To say we are grateful beyond words would be a huge understatement.”

Craig Morgan is nominated for an Academy of Country Music award in the Top New Male Vocalist category. When he received the news, Morgan was in the studio working on the follow-up album to “My Kind of Livin’.” He says of the honor, “I have had such a great career doing what I love and the support I have received from radio and the fans is so humbling.”

Van Zant is honored with an Academy of Country Music nomination in the Top Vocal Duo category. Donnie Van Zant says, “Since this is our first country album, it is a real honor just to be nominated.” Brother Johnny adds, “Last year we were there as presenters, this year we’re nominees.”
