Only George Strait could accept a career honor and spend the whole speech giving it away.
The King of Country Music received the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Career Maker Award on Monday night, October 26, at the Hall’s 56th Anniversary Gala at Nashville’s Music City Center. Longtime collaborators Dean Dillon and Gary Nicholson brought him to the stage, and Strait wasted no time flipping the script on the whole idea.

“I think they got this turned around, because they made my career,” he told the room full of writers. “That’s the way I feel. I truly do and I always will.”
What Is the Career Maker Award?
This isn’t an award that gets handed out every year. In fact, it’s only been given once before, to Reba McEntire in 2018. The Career Maker Award honors people outside the Hall whose artistic work has helped songwriters build careers worthy of induction.
In other words, it’s for the artists who hear a great song, take a chance on it, and carry it to the world. Nobody fits that description better than Strait.
George Strait by the Numbers: 264 Songs, 72 Hall of Famers
Strait has never been known as a songwriter first. He’s known as a song finder, and the numbers behind this award are staggering:
- 264 songs recorded that were written or co-written by Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame members
- 72 different Hall of Fame writers behind those songs
- 65 Top 40 singles among them
- 44 of those 72 writers had not yet been inducted when Strait first recorded their songs
That last stat is the one that matters. More than half the writers were recorded by Strait before the Hall came calling. He didn’t just pick proven hitmakers. He picked great songs, and in plenty of cases, his picks helped make those writers legends.
A Classic Strait Speech (Short, Funny, Sincere)
Anyone who’s watched Strait at an awards show knows he’s not exactly a fan of the microphone between songs. He leaned right into it, right after fellow honoree Taylor Swift had joked in her own speech about his famous aversion to the fame side of the business.
“When I first heard that they wanted to give me this award, I’m going like, ‘Okay, I’ll come only if I can make a speech.’ You know how good at that I am,” he said, laughing.
He also got honest about his history with Music City. Strait admitted his relationship with Nashville hasn’t always been easy, but said the city and its songwriting community have shown him tremendous support over the years.
“I’ve always loved coming to Nashville and recording here and being here and being around these guys and seeing them from time to time,” he said. “I just want to say thank y’all. All of you who sent songs my way and made my career. I appreciate it very much. Thank you.”
Dean Dillon: The Writer Behind So Many Strait Classics
It was fitting that Dean Dillon helped present the award. Dillon, a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer himself, has written or co-written some of the most beloved songs in Strait’s catalog, including:
- “Unwound” (Strait’s debut single)
- “The Chair”
- “Ocean Front Property”
- “Marina Del Rey”
- “Nobody in His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her”
- “I’ve Come to Expect It From You”
That’s a lifetime of wedding dances, road trip singalongs and honky-tonk closing times right there.
Inside the 2026 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala
Strait’s award shared the night with the Hall’s Class of 2026: Taylor Swift, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Camp, Lee Thomas Miller, Bruce Channel and the late J.I. Allison. Lainey Wilson helped celebrate Swift with a bluegrass take on “Love Story,” complete with fiddle and stand-up bass.
It also capped a big year of songwriting recognition for Strait, who was inducted into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier in 2026.

Give the Writers Their Flowers
Strait’s whole career has been a lesson in humility: find the best song in the room, sing it like you mean it, and let the music do the talking. On Monday night, he made sure the people who wrote those songs heard it loud and clear.
As he put it himself: “They made my career.”
