Koe Wetzel is back, and he’s ready to tear up the airwaves all over again.
Following a historic, record-shattering radio run in 2025 where his Double-Platinum hit “High Road” featuring Jessie Murph spent five consecutive weeks at No. 1 and locked it down as the most-played song at Country Radio for the entire year, the Texas-born firebrand is charging right back into the spotlight.
This week, Koe officially dropped “Hurts Like You,” the jagged, high-octane lead single from his highly anticipated sixth studio album, The Night Champion, dropping June 12 via Columbia Records.
A Toxic Romance Wrapped in Post-Grunge Grit
Written by Wetzel alongside heavy-hitters Ashley Gorley, Steph Jones, Carrie K, and producer Gabe Simon, “Hurts Like You” offers the signature raw intensity Koe’s diehard fans crave, but with a vulnerable twist. It’s an absolute sonic gut-punch about surrendering to the desires that cut you wide open.
Just look at these lyrics:
I’ll walk through fire If it burns like you Hold me like a knife Baby cut me right in two Drag me through the dirt like you always do I can take the pain if it hurts like you
“‘Hurts Like You’ was one of the first songs that we wrote for the record,” Koe says of the track. “It’s kind of about a toxic relationship; whenever you get into those situations, you know it’s not good for you, but there’s just something about it that keeps bringing you back. It’s hard to get away from. I feel like a lot of people go through that, so I hope people can relate to the way that we felt about it.”
Critics are already losing their minds over the genre-blending masterpiece. VICE heavily praised the song’s crossover appeal, calling it “an alt-rock revival… the Texas-born rocker blends Country & Western with post-grunge in a way that scratches so many itches. ‘Hurts Like You’ has grit, but never sacrifices melody. It’s relentlessly catchy, but it still has balls.”

Welcome to The Night Champion Era
Arriving on June 12, The Night Champion serves as the official continuation of his globally acclaimed record 9 Lives. The new album captures the wild aftermath of Koe’s explosive rise, balancing his trademark force and ragged details with the hard-earned perspective that only comes from surviving the chaos.
“Really, it’s everything that’s happened – because you don’t go from kids playing for beer to headlining Red Rocks, arenas all over the country, partying and trying to make sense of it all and not shift,” Koe reflects. “My head space is clearer now. I can look back, see how it fits together. It doesn’t make sense, exactly, but it all happened. That search for what it all means keeps bringing me back.”
Whether you’ve been screaming the words since his Texas indie breakout Noise Complaint, or you just hopped on the bandwagon during last year’s radio takeover, this album is designed to bring every era of the Wetzel fanbase together under one roof.
“I’m not torn between the worlds,” Koe notes. “This is where all the fans meet. No matter when they got here, this is that moment.”
